The Story of Aske

Long ago, just north of Nipfjället, on a starry spring night when the full moon was at its highest, a little reindeer was born. The spring night was silent and still when suddenly the forest was illuminated. A herd of reindeer slowly began to awaken, thinking it was morning. It resembled sunlight, and suddenly the night turned bright. It was magical moonbeams shining from the moon down onto the herd, the beams traveled from reindeer to reindeer and eventually stopped at the newly born little reindeer calf. The entire herd gathered in a circle around the newborn reindeer.

That night, they named him Aske – the Sami name for moon.

Years passed, and Aske grew up to become a big reindeer. The magical moonbeams had granted Aske special powers – he was, in fact, the bravest and kindest reindeer of them all. Whenever one of his reindeer friends got scared, Aske was always there to provide encouragement.

Playing with the children at Idre Fjäll was Aske's favorite thing to do, and instead of eating leaves and lichen, he preferred to grill hotdogs with buns and drink juice. Aske was not like any other reindeer; he was friends with everything and everyone – from the trout in Burusjön, with whom he used to swim, to the lemmings in the forest below Städjan, with whom he played hide and seek.

When the rest of the reindeer herd went in search of new grazing grounds, Aske always stayed at Idre Fjäll. Here, there were always exciting adventures around every corner – such as skiing, climbing, swimming, cycling, and, of course, playing with all the children! If you're at Idre Fjäll and see the moon shining in the sky, it's Aske replenishing his powers. It doesn't happen every night, but keep an eye out, for you might also become even braver thanks to the magical moonbeams.
