Packing List For Mountain Hiking
Packing correctly for your hike is essential to ensure a great experience in the mountains. But what do you really need to bring? We've put together a packing list with everything you should have in your backpack for a day on the beautiful hiking trails.
The area around Idre, Särna, and Grövelsjön is full of fantastic hiking trails. Exploring new paths in the wilderness, surrounded by breathtaking mountain views, is a wonderful summer and autumn activity. However, for a successful and smooth hike, you need the right (and lightweight) gear. Here’s a list of must-have items for your day hike.

For a comfortable and enjoyable hike, the right gear and light packing are essential.
- Map and Compass
First and foremost, bring a map and compass to ensure you stay on the right path in the mountains. We recommend using the Fjällkartan at a 1:50,000 scale, which provides a clear overview of the terrain, streams, elevation changes, and trails. You can purchase Fjällkartan at ICA Nära Idre Fjäll. Although the Fjällkartan is available as an app, remember that mobile coverage can be unreliable in the mountains, and batteries can drain quickly. Always carry a physical map as a backup. A compass is also essential. The most commonly used type is an orienteering compass.
- Hiking Boots
One of the most important things for a successful hike is a good pair of hiking boots. To avoid blisters, it's crucial to break in your boots before your trip. Start by wearing them around the house, then take short walks, gradually increasing the distance.

To avoid blisters and sore feet, make sure to break in your hiking boots before heading out into the mountains.
- Water bottle
Hiking is physically demanding, and on warm days, it’s especially important to stay hydrated. Bring a water bottle that keeps your water cold to ensure you have fresh water throughout your hike.
- Insulation jacket
An insulation jacket works as a mid-layer and is lightweight yet highly insulating—perfect for mountain hiking and unpredictable weather conditions.
- Insect repellent
Mosquitoes love the lush green nature of the mountains, so we highly recommend bringing insect repellent to keep them away.
- Sunscreen
Above the clouds, the sun shines bright! Protect your skin by applying sunscreen before and during your hike.
- Food & energy
As mentioned earlier, hiking takes a lot of energy. Make sure to pack enough food and snacks, depending on how long you plan to be out.

Resting your legs and refueling with energy is essential to keep going throughout your hike.
- Rain gear
Hiking in wet clothes will make you cold quickly. Bring lightweight rain gear that you can easily put on if the weather takes a turn.
- Blister tape
It’s worth repeating—hiking with blisters is no fun. Make sure to pack blister tape in case your boots start rubbing. Also, check if there’s anything else you might need in your first aid kit, as there is no pharmacy at Idre Fjäll.
- Extra clothing
An extra sweater and a pair of socks can be a lifesaver if it gets colder than expected. If you need any additional gear, you’ll find everything at Mountain Sports, Idre Fjäll’s sports shop.
- Trash bag
It’s important that we all do our part in protecting nature and keeping the mountains clean. Bring a small bag to collect and carry out your trash during the hike.
- Camera
Last but not least—your camera! The view from Städjan’s peak is breathtaking, and you’ll definitely want to capture all the stunning landscapes and unforgettable memories.
