How long should your skis be? This is a common question among skiers. Having skis that match your height and skiing style is crucial—not only for comfort but also for safety. Here’s a guide to help you choose the right ski length for the most enjoyable experience on the slopes.
First things first—are you a beginner or an experienced skier?
For beginners: If you're new to skiing, shorter skis are generally easier to control. For those sticking to the slopes, the recommended ski length is 0–10 cm shorter than your height, roughly reaching between your chin and nose.
For advanced skiers: Longer skis require more skill to handle. If you’re an experienced skier who enjoys off-piste skiing and a more aggressive style, your skis can be as long as you are or even up to 10 cm longer. That said, a shorter ski can still work well, depending on your preference.
For a smooth and enjoyable skiing experience, it’s important to have skis that match your height and skiing style.
When choosing cross-country skis, we base the length on our height and skiing experience. For classic cross-country skiing, the skis should be about 20 cm longer than your height. If you primarily ski using the skate technique, add around 10–15 cm to your height to determine the right ski length. For competitive skiers, there are specific regulations on ski length.
Classic cross-country skiing requires longer skis compared to skate skiing.
What about the right ski length for kids? For younger children who are learning to ski and attending ski school, it is recommended that the skis be about 20 cm shorter than the child's height. Once the child gains confidence and improves their skills, skis that are around 10 cm shorter than their height will be sufficient.
Children’s skis should be even shorter while they are still learning to ski.
