Dress Properly to Stay Warm

Winter at Idre Fjäll offers an amazing skiing experience, but sometimes the cold can be a challenge for both visitors and equipment. To ensure that your time here is memorable regardless of the weather, we share valuable tips to help you dress appropriately and handle the cold.

Use the Layering Principle

To handle the cold properly, it is essential to dress correctly! Use the layering principle, which means wearing multiple thin layers instead of a few thick ones. Several thinner layers with air in between insulate heat better, keeping you warmer.

Layer 1: Base Layer

The innermost layer, known as the base layer, is the first layer in direct contact with your skin. Its main function is to wick moisture away from your body to keep you dry. Wool is an excellent choice as it retains warmth even when damp. Synthetic base layers are also a good alternative, but they need frequent washing to maintain their functionality and prevent odor buildup.

Layer 2: Mid Layer

The second layer, the mid layer, is worn over the base layer and primarily absorbs moisture from the first layer. Wool is a great choice for this layer as well.

Layer 3: Insulation Layer

The third layer, the insulation layer, is responsible for retaining body heat. This is also the adjustable layer that you can modify depending on your activity level. Materials such as wool, fleece, down, or synthetic insulation are commonly used here.

Layer 4: Outer Layer

The fourth layer, also known as the outer layer, serves as protection against wind and weather. It should be windproof and waterproof. Materials like Gore-Tex or similar waterproof membranes are commonly used for this layer.

Keep Your Hands & Feet Warm

Hands and feet are sensitive to the cold. Apply the layering principle to your hands by wearing thin wool liners under thick gloves, preferably with an additional mid-layer. To prevent frozen toes, wear wool or silk socks, change them regularly, and keep your toes moving! There are also special heated socks and insoles that can help keep extra cold feet and toes warm.

Eat and Drink to Stay Warm

Two other important factors for handling the cold are eating properly and drinking warm beverages.

By drinking warm beverages, you help your body focus on retaining heat instead of using unnecessary energy to warm up cold drinks. The body generates its own heat through a process called thermogenesis, which is primarily influenced by physical activity and diet. That’s why it’s essential to provide your body with enough energy through nutritious food or snacks to support its natural ability to keep you warm.

You are more than welcome to visit one of our restaurants to refuel. The cozy and warm spaces also provide a great place to take a break from the cold and wind outside.
